When was the last time you wrote a little note by hand?
I’m not talking about quickly scribbled notes on a sticky note to avoid forgetting something in the middle of a stressful moment, but about truly sitting down, taking your time, and putting on paper the things you’d like to say to the people who matter most to you.
In a world where everything moves so fast, taking the time to handwrite a card (for the end of the year, for instance) might seem like a simple or even outdated gesture, but it’s actually a very powerful act. It’s a way to reconnect with what truly matters: human connections and genuine emotions.
Even though I’ve always loved writing, it’s thanks to the yearly ritual of a friend that I reconnected with the beauty of handwritten words. At the end of each year, she carefully picks out cards, crafts beautiful envelopes adorned with drawings, writes thoughtful messages in lovely handwriting, and personalizes each one for the people who were important in her life that year.
Through her gesture of expressing gratitude, I rediscovered the magic of writing. The magic that happens when you receive something made with care. The value of holding in your hands a little treasure, crafted with someone’s time and love. It’s more than just a pleasant surprise in a world where handwritten notes are becoming rare, it’s a warm reminder that you matter to someone.

For me, receiving a handwritten card is a true gift. Every word feels like a declaration. Taking the time to thoughtfully choose your words and share a sincere message creates a feeling that goes beyond a simple exchange—it strengthens the bond between people.

We’re always focused on what’s next: the next task on our to-do list, the next appointment, and so on. It’s a choice we make to invest our time and energy to show someone how much they mean to us.

What struck me the most about this tradition is the emotion I feel when I receive a card. It’s not just a simple message—it’s something that goes straight to the heart. As someone whose love language includes words of affirmation, gestures like this really move me. They make me feel seen and appreciated in a way that’s comforting and deeply touching.
And when you think about it, we rarely get chances to express how much we appreciate the people we care about—weddings, funerals...? But don’t the relationships that bring light to our lives deserve more than that? This tradition inspired me to write cards too, whenever I got the chance, to share my love, my gratitude, and the little things I cherish about my loved ones.
It’s about bringing value back to what truly matters. And knowing that your words will touch the person receiving them feels amazing. It’s beautiful to think that we can brighten someone’s day with such a simple gesture.
